BUSY WEEKEND FOR THE RIDE ALONGS

Dec. 17th Members and 2 ride alongs from Allentown, Pa had a busy     weekend, with 17 runs.  Including 2 MVA's, 2 Chimneys, 2 AFA's, 2         Transfer's, 3 Wires down, 1 Inside Investigation, 1 Outside                        Investigation, and 4 Medicals.                                                                                 

 

MINOR MVA

Dec. 14th E171, SU17, SQ41, and Amb 7-8 responded to a minor MVA    at 973 Cider Press Rd. Surprisingly upon arrival PSP was already on     the scene, and stated there were no patients and no hazards.  Asst. 17  canceled the Squad and placed the box in service minutes later.            

 

TRAINING

Dec. 13th Members headed to town for the evening as a joint training   exercise was held at Headquarters Station.  The evenings activities       was for the two department to meet and familiarize their self with        each others equipment and location. Special thanks to Nick and Tim   for their support of the cause.                                                                                  

 

HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Dec. 13th Members spent the day hanging Christmas decorations and  lights inside and out of the station. To stick with the theme the               station was outfitted our signature colors.  Thanks to those who             helped, and made this possible.                                                                              

 

WELCOME HOME

Dec. 11th The Officers and Members of the New Franklin Vol. Fire          Dept. would like to welcome home Reese and the rest of the Schaeffer  family.  Reese made it home today after spending nearly 2 months at   Hershey Medical Center growing strong enough to eat and breath on    his own.                                                                                                                              

 

MOBILE HOME

Dec. 9th Truck 17 and E172 responded to 5518 Main St. Marion lot 5     at 0845 for a mobile home fire.  Co.8 arrived to find a mobile home        with a small fire in the bathroom and put a quick knock on it.                  Command 8 held 8 and T17 for overhaul. Crews set up positive                pressure and assisted with overhaul. Units were back in service in         under an hour.                                                                                                                

 

LANDING ZONE

Dec. 3rd Engine 17-1 responded to fill the 7-5 box for an auto                   accident in the 5600 blk of LWE.  E171 was redirected to the LZ at          Fayetteville Elementary School.                                                                              

 

INSIDE INVESTIGATION

Dec. 2nd Truck 17 responded to 36 W. Main Street, Waynesboro on       box 2-01 for the inside investigation.  Da' Truck staged at Potomac        and Main.  Crews assisted Co. 2 checking walls and ceilings with the     TIC.  Units were on the scene for over an hour.                                                

 

HOUSE 

Nov. 29th Units from Co. 1, 17, and Sta. 4 responded for a report of        smoke coming from the dwelling.  AC 1-1 arrived to find a fire in the     living room.  Members from Sta. 4 put a quick knock on the fire which  had already began to burn itself out.  Crews preformed ventilation        and overhaul procedures and units remained on the scene a little         over an hour.   Fire was started by a propane heater.                                    

 

SIDE OF GREASE WITH THAT? 

Nov. 27th Units from Co. 1, 17, and Sta. 4 responded to Hardees on        LWE ,for a reported electrical fire.  After a thorough investigation it    was determined that a flash fire had occurred, due to a severe grease   build up, and over heated a roof  top vent system also tripping a             breaker. Units remained on the scene for about 45 minutes.                     

 

COVERING THE "BRONX"

Nov. 17th With Truck 1 and 42 out of service for the annual                       Chambersburg  "Holiday" Parade, Da' Big Stick II covered the Boro       for about two hours.  Originally we were to standby at Station 2,             however the Police  Department needed assistance with lighting in       the area of  Washington and Second.  Trk 17 lit the corner up with         flood lights and watched the parade as well.                                                     

 

FCPSTC

Nov. 17th Da' Big Stick II spent the afternoon at the training center      assisting with the new Del-Mar curriculum.  Students went over              power tool operation, proper ladder climbing techniques, and how to  throw basic ground ladders.                                                                                     

 

HOUSE

Nov. 14th Eng Co. 17 responded to 65 E. Main St. on box 7-5 for a             reported dwelling fire.  A member from Co. 7 was on the scene and         confirmed a "working structure fire".  Chief 7 arrived with command   and DC7 had Ops.  Crews from 7 put a quick knock on a small fire and  was under control in minutes.  Chief downgraded the assignment          shortly after and crews returned to service.                                                      

 

2085, BUT NOT FOR A MEDICAL

Nov. 6th E171, SU17 responded to 2085 Wayne Rd. for an auto                 accident.  Asst.17 arrived just after dispatch to find two autos with       one in the tree.  A1-9 transported one class 3 and crews controlled        fluid leaks. The rescue company was turned around shortly after           dispatch. Units remained on the scene for about 20 minutes                    

 

CONGRATULATIONS

Nov. 1st The officers and members of the New Franklin Fire                      Department sends out our congratulations and welcomes the newest   member to the Schaeffer family.  Kevin and Michelle Schaeffer are the proud new parents of a baby boy; Reese Schaeffer.  Everyone is well       and healthy as the baby was born at Hershey Medical center.                   

 

MVA

Oct. 31st E171, SQ41, A8-8, and A7-7 responded to the intersection of   Wayne Rd., and Kriner Rd. for an auto accident around 15:30 Hrs.        E171 arrived to find two autos, roadway partialy blocked, and no           serious hazards.  Sq 41 was placed in service and the second bls was     started after the driver of the second vehicle decided to be evaluated   by ER staff.  Crews remained on the scene for about 30 minutes.             

 

HOUSE FIRE

Oct. 25th Da' Big Stick II was back in the Boro for a house fire at 248     E. Mckinley St.  Da' Truck just happened to be in getting fuel when the assignment was sounded.  Su 17 responded with the remainder of the  Truck crew.  Crews laddered the dwelling as well as set up                         ventilation, and lighting.  Utilities were controlled and members           helped with overhaul once the investigation was complete.  Units          operated for just over an hour.                                                                                

 

SMOKE SCARE AND SHED FIRE

Oct. 16th Trk 17, and E171 responded to 34 Renolds Ave. for reported  smoke in the dwelling.  Co.17 staged and was placed in service shortly after.  At 15:30 Hrs E172 responded on the shed fire with exposures at 5195 Jack Rd.  E172 hauled two loads of water and crew assisted with  overhaul. E172 went in service about a half hour later.                                

 

BARN FIRE

Oct. 13th E172 responded along with the rest of the 7-5 box and a few   tankers for a barn fire at 1215 Mont Alto Rd.  E17 crew pulled the           second line off 7-2 and advanced it into the attic space of a milking      parlor. The crew encountered heavy fire conditions and tried to place a knock on it.  Trk 42 crew opened up the roof and eventually went        heavy duty once the fire gained control of the scene.  Units operated    for about 2 hours and E172 made 4 water shuttles.                                        

 

BURGER KING

Oct. 13th  Units were back out on Lincoln Way this morning at Burger King.  E172 and Trk 17 responded, later to be downgraded to the            Truck only.  Crews set up ventilation as a fire was already                          extinguished by the hood system.                                                                           

 

KFC

Oct. 12th  Units were alerted on box 44-01 for a reported building fire  at KFC.  E171, E172, and Trk 17 responded and staged.  The truck           crew assisted with laddering, and later found out that it was a mulch  fire.  Crew went in service shortly after. About an hour later E172, and Da Truck responded to a mobile home fire at 5413 LWE.  Truck 17         opened up the skirting around the mobile and found a small fire            around a thermal layer of a pipe.                                                                           

 

FIRE PREVENTION

Oct. 12th With the leaves turning and cool air blowing, we all know it  is that time of year again.  Members spent the day out to the local          schools visiting and teaching the kids fire prevention. This years           theme was knowing your escape route.                                                                

 

HOUSE FIRE

Oct. 10th  E171, E172 and Trk 17 responded for a report of a mobile       home fire that turned out to be a modular home with a large garage.    \ Units arrived to find heavy fire and with fire attack.  Co. 17 members assisted with operations and ventilation. Units returned to service a    few hours later.                                                                                                               

 

BARN FIRE

Oct. 9th  E171, E172, and Da Big Stick responded on box 7-7 to 2071       Mt. Pleasant Rd., for a barn fire.  Crews spent hours on fire                        suppression and overhaul.  Trk . 17 went in service 7 hours later.          

 

L.O.D.D. SERVICES

Oct. 9th  Members and family from several counties converged in           Bigglersville today to unite as we pay our last respects to a fallen           brother. Adam Cole was responding to a fire call as he was fatally          injured in a two vehicle accident.  Our thoughts are with you.                  

 

 

 

BACK IN THE BOROUGH

Oct. 7th  Truck 17  responded on a reported dwelling fire at 364 E.         McKinley St., in Chambersburg.  Truck 17 is now part of the first             alarm assignment for dwellings as a supplement to Trk 1. This will be  the first time Co. 17 has ran first alarm since the now disbanded Task  Force 1 box.                                                                                                                       

AFA AT MICHAUX

Oct. 6th  Truck 17  responded on the AFA to Michaux Manor for alarm bells.  Da' Big Stick II set up and went to the roof for the                              investigation.  Placed in service shortly there after.                                      

 

MVA

Oct. 5th  E171 responded to box 17-3 in the 1500 Blk of New Franklin    Rd. Crews helped package patient, and then went in service to                 respond on a brush fire on Hartzok Rd.                                                               

 

L.O.D.D.

Oct 5th  The Officers, and Members of the New Franklin Volunteer        Fire Department would like to express our deepest sympathies to the  Cole Family in their time of loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with    you.  If there is anything our department  can do in any way please       feel free to contact us.                                                                                                  

MOBILE HOME

Sept 29th  E171 and E172 responded on the mobile home fire at 5300    LWE lot 4A.  E7 arrived with smoke showing, and put a quick knock      on the vacant property.  Command 7 staged all units and Co. 17 was     placed in service within 15 minutes.  E172 handled a transfer to Co. 7  and no call were handled during that time.                                                       

MVA

Sept 28th  E171 responded to box 8-81-B, which turned out to be box    44-01, on an auto accident at LWE and the NB on ramp.  This                   intersection has become notorious for MVA's ever since the                       construction work has been completed.  E171 continued in and               assisted with Pt. care and hazards.  Co.17 was placed in service               shortly after.                                                                                                                    

 

WIRES, BARN, AND A HOUSE

Sept 27th  A quick moving storm brought 3 runs for 17.  E171                    responded to Newcomer Rd. for wires, turned out to be cable only,         and cleared within minutes.  While 171 was returning Da' Truck             responded on the 15-3 box for a barn, and was soon placed in service.  Minutes later box 44-04 was sounded for a dwelling sending 171, 172,   and Truck 17.  Members of the truck made quick work of the roof and   vented while the engine crews stood by.  Co. 17 was back in service at    20:15 hrs.                                                                                                                           

 

I-81

Sept 22nd  E171 responded on the auto accident at I-81 on the                 Northbound off ramp.  171 provided manpower and was placed in         service shortly after.                                                                                                     

 

TRAINING

Sept 20th  Members took a break    from the usual Truck Co. work        drills to focus on the "bread and    butter" of the Engine Co..                   Members from 17 and 14 went          through several evolutions from     room and contents to simulated     basement fires. Both departments worked together to accomplish       the goals and tactics that were        taught back in essentials.                 

 

ANOTHER OUTBUILDING

Sept 19th  Da' Big Stick II responded along with most of the county to  4987 Guitner Rd. for what was originally a shed fire that turned into    a large outbuilding storing everything from ATV's to crates of                  household cleaners.  Units arrived to find heavy fire. Members from     Sta.4, and 17 made an aggressive attack, only to be pulled out                  minutes later after gaining information of the contents of the                  building.  Truck 17 took a position side c and went heavy duty. After    heavy equipment was brought in to demolish the building a final wet   down was preformed and units went in service hours later.   The last    picture shows the barn fire on Shimpstown Rd. atop of ladder 17 .         

 

 

 

EARLY MORNING OUT BUILDING

Sept 10th  Co. 17 was alerted on the ?5-02? box for a barn at 7012           Rock Hill Rd. at 02:07hrs. E172 arrived to confirm a large shed fully     involved already on the ground.  Crews placed two hand lines in-           service and began controlling the exposure that suffered some minor  exterior damage as well as knocking down hot spots on the fire               building. Units from 5 advanced additional hand lines for overhaul.    The call originally came in from Amb. 5-7 as they were returning           from another incident. Truck 17 staged for lighting purposes.                 

 

PEPPERONI ON THAT?

Sept 7th Truck 17 and E17-2 responded on the building fire at                 Arturo's Pizza early Friday morning.  Da' Big Stick II took a side A         position and laddered side A&D along with the roof, and vented on       side A&C, as well as  set up PPV on Side B .  Crews  operated for about   2 hours and assisted with overhaul.                                                                      

 

HURST TOOL TRAINING

Sept 6th 17 Hose headed out to Beachers junkyard for a little "tool        time" Thursday evening with the Hurst tool rep, demonstrating the      new power units and tools offered by the company. After a little              instruction on the operation of the new units members tore into 4         cars that were donated by the junkyard.  The Department is looking     to outfit E172 with a second rescue tool and cutters.                                    

 

DOES THIS STUFF WORK

Sept 5th Several members have spent countless hours removing the outdated and antique striping on E171.  Taking the Scotchlite off is the easy part, removing the adhesive has been very time consuming.  The new striping is in and will be applied in the near future.  Thanks to those that are making this happen. 

 

MVA

Sept 5th E171, SU-17 responded for an MVA on Wayne Rd. at I-81.         Crews arrived to find multiple vehicles.  Crews assessed patients and   had 2 class 3 transports and 3 patient refusals. After hazards were        cleared units went in service.                                                                                   

 

CONGRATULATIONS

The NFVFD would like to congratulate Micah Owens on his                       acceptance into the Borough Of Chambersburg Fire Department.           Good luck at the Academy, and have fun riding the "bus".                         

 

100th ANNUAL PATH VALLEY PARADE

August 18th Members spent countless hours preparing for the annual Path Valley Parade.  Because it was the 100th anniversary we decided  to "Dump the House" and head over the hill, and it all paid off in the    end.  Co.1 7 ended up bringing home 4 awards including the 6.5 foot     best overall appearing company.  Other awards included second            place aerial device, second place engine (171), and first place special  unit.  The parade lasted 2 hours and had about 200 entries with 75%   being fire apparatus.  Congratulations to all that attended and               brought home awards, it was a good time for all, and a tradition that   will continue for many years to come. Thanks to Adams Truck 13 and  Adams E4-1 for covering our house while we attended. "From one          Pierce to another."

TRANSFER AND MVA

August 11th E172 headed across the border to AC Co. 13 on a transfer.  It was a quiet day until local box 13-6 was sounded for an MVA.  E172  along with Adams Cty. units responded to find two vehicles with the     roadway blocked.  Crew from E172 assisted with Patient care and           vehicle hazards.  No other calls were handled.                                                 

 

BURN BAN BANDIT

August 10th Local box 17-4 was sounded at 09:16 for a brush fire at       5420 G.H.Rd.  Co. 17 arrived to find the home owner burning her            trash off after reading of the impending county wide burn ban. After    explaining the ordinance already in place against burning trash the    fire was extinguished and units went in service shortly after.                   

 

DOUBLE WIDE

August 10th Box 17-3 was sounded at 03:49 for a dwelling fire at 1881  Hartzok Rd.  Co. 17 arrived to find a well involved doublewide mobile  home.  Crews made an aggressive search once there was word of              possible entrapment.   Once the dwelling was cleared and                          homeowners stated there was no one home at the time, defensive           operations were initiated, and overhaul began.  All crews on scene        did a good job and worked together to get the job done in a timely          manner.  Co.17 was assisted by 8, Sta. 4, 7, and 14.                                         

 

SMOKE AND TRANSFER

August 9th Truck 17 responded on the 2-40box at 1523 E. Main St. in    the Wayne Heights mall for smoke in the building.  Crews found             smoke in two of the stores, and truck 17 assisted with trying to locate  the origin on the smoke.  E172 transferred to Co.2 later in the evening  while they operated a dwelling fire in Washington Cty. E172 returned  to service around 0100 hrs.                                                                                        

 

CSX RAIL YARD

August 8th As construction continues on a 46 million dollar rail yard, preemptive response measures are being developed. This yard covers  160 acres and will be loading and unloading over 240 full size trailers everyday and have storage for over 1000.  Hazardous materials will      become a major issue for the area as these trailers are carrying               everything from paper towels to radio active materials.  All trailers      being loaded on this facility will be leaving on one of the major                thoroughfares including I-81 and Rt.'s 30 and 11   A special Haz-Mat    class will be offered to local jurisdictions regarding special                       awareness involving trains.                                                                                       

 

HELPING BROTHERS IN NEED

August 7th While members were attending the monthly meeting, a        phone call was received to the station in reference to an sudden             transfer to Co.2, while they operated their yearly carnival.  This all       came about when a neighboring department of Co.2's never showed      up.  Apparently this isn't the first time this happened.  No calls were    handled during this time.  E172 will be transferring again Friday.         

STORMY NIGHT

August 3rd A micro-burst that encompassed the central and                    southern parts of the county brought numerous runs for Co. 17 and      kept other departments scrambling as well.

REFRESHER

August 2nd Once the Da' Big Stick returned from the mobile home         fire, they went directly to the evenings training site, where they were    joined with the rest of the members.  Due to the seasonably warm           temps ,members wanted to do something a little different and refresh our skills at basic water rescue and drafting operations.  With                 limited equipment to use we went over some life or death scenarios      that would require us to attempt an water rescue.  With flash flood       season in effect the chances of  water rescues are elevated.  Once            completed, current and to be operators exercised drafting                        procedures. Members wrapped up at 2200hrs.                                                 

 

W.F.D.

August 2nd Truck 17 went with 6 on the W.F.D. to  Green Ln. assisting Co.4  on a mobile home fire. Members from 17 assisted with overhaul   and mop up and was placed in service about an hour later.                       

 

BRUSH FIRE

August 1st E172, E171, SU 17 responded for a brush fire on                         Greencorner Rd.  Crews arrived to find about a half an acre on fire        that was in a semi-wooded area.  Crews used 3 lines to quickly                 contain the fire.  Water from all three units  was exhausted just as the fire was placed under control.                                                                                 

 

 

HIGH SPEED CHASE

August 1st E171 responded to fill the box on the 3-81B assignment for  an accident as a result of a high speed chase that originated in                Hagerstown.  Crews stood by with manpower, and was placed in             service shortly after.                                                                                                     

 

OUT BUILDING FIRE

July 31stBox 44-04 was sounded at 23:15 for a reported barn fire in       the 2200 BLK of LWW.  Fire turned out to be at Gishes lumber on           Frank Rd.  Crews staged in the manpower pool and were later placed   in service as there was no savable property.  Truck 42 went heavy           duty and overhaul was taken care of by a front end loader. Units            returned to service about an hour later.                                                              

 

BRUSH TASK FORCE

July 31st Special Unit 17 along with units from 8, Sta. 4 ,and 18               contained a brush fire that was spreading rapidly in multiple                  directions and was threatening a garage. Crews worked rapidly to         stop the fire and had an extensive overhaul operations.  Units                 operated for around an hour.                                                                                   

 

BUILDING FIRE

July 28th With the ladder truck  only being back in service for a few      hours,  Box 5-06 was sounded for a building fire sending Co. 17, and      surrounding departments. Crews arrived to find a large out building    involved.  Once a water supply was established Da' Big Stick II went      heavy duty on it.  Members assisted with overhaul and other small        tasks.  Check out the two short vids of the fire.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT

July 16th E171 responded along with Co. 3, on local box 3-17 for a          report of a motorcycle accident.  E171 arrived to find single                      motorcycle and 1 Pt. involved.  Crews Packaged Pt. and controlled         hazards.  Units were back in service in about a half an hour.                    

 

 

TRUCK 17 O.O.S.

July 15th Da' Big Stick II will be O.O.S. for approximately 2 weeks.         The unit will be undergoing post purchase ladder adjustments, as         well as the final mounting of some equipment, including  2 chargers     for the Holmotro SCRT and some hand lights.  While in the shop, P.M. will be preformed.                                                                                                          

 

HAZ-MAT

July 12th Co. 17 members had a busy day.  After 2 med locals an AFA    and a X-Fer, E172 rounded out the evening assisting Co.8 with a             possible Haz-Mat at the Target distribution warehouse.  E172 staged   and was  assigned as the RIT team.  The team was then split up and      did an exterior sweep of the perimeter searching for the mysterious     spill.  Co. 17 went back in service about an hour later.                                  

 

 

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN

July 11th With nice weather around its time for the annual hose             testing.  Members spent the evening testing the hose on E172 and           have plans to replace all the LDH in the coming months.  Thanks to      all who participated.                                                                                                    

 

 

 

2ND ALARM FOR MULTI-DWELLINGS

July 9th Da' Big Stick II was alerted on the second alarm for multiple  dwellings on fire shortly after midnight to 54 Homestead Dr.  Truck      17 with 6 responded and arrived only minutes after some of the first    alarm units with the assignment to set up ladder pipe operations on    side C of the main fire unit.  Command then advised to hold off and      crews from 17 split up and advanced 2 pre-connects off of  2-1 for          attack of the Bravo exposure.  DC17 was assigned accountability,           and   Da' Truck later went heavy duty on the buildings  and assisted      with overhaul.  E172 handled a X-Fer to Co.3 and no calls were                received during this time.                                                                                          

DOVE SEASON?

July 5th While responding to a recent incident a kamikaze Dove             decided to try and take out the big17.  As you can see he didn't fare       too well.  Better luck next time!!                                                                             

 

A NEW LOOK

June 23rd After the recent purchase of 2 new pieces of apparatus, it     was also time to make a change to the web.  With an ever changing        world of technology, keeping abreast of what is available, and                  knowing your available resources, is an invaluable tool that should      be channeled any way possible.  Thanks to all who keep this business   a safe and successful one for Firefighters and EMS personnel across     the board.
